It enters at a break, then travels along sarking, battens and rafters before it drops through the ceiling. The stain can be several metres from the actual failure, and on a low-pitch roof further still.
That's why leak tracing is charged as its own task. Anyone quoting a fixed price for a leak repair without getting on the roof is guessing, and the guess is usually wrong in their favour.
Cracked or slipped tiles, most often from hail or from someone walking the roof incorrectly. Deteriorated ridge capping where the bedding mortar has failed. Perished valley iron, which rusts out of sight under the tiles either side.
